Entry #5: Tailgating

Mayhem
Tailgating
This clever car insurance ad uses a character named mayhem that personifies chaos and unexpected events that could happen to anybody. This serves two purposes it creates a humorous environment that grabs the audience attention effectively, but it also sends a serious message about how unpredictable life can be and how dangerous the road is. By having mayhem tailgate another car on the way to his tailgate party, the advertisement combines the lighthearted events of football activities with the very real dangers of aggressive driving.

Allstate also effectively creates a relatable connection to its viewers because almost everyone has been tailgated before or witnessed aggressive driving. By showing how distracted the driver is which causes him to crash into the car in front of him because of mayhem behind him. The commercial reaches into the viewers emotions and fears of the unpredictable events of driving. It reminds them that no matter how perfect you drive you can never control external factors (Mayhem). It can still lead to unpredictable accidents. The use of irony where mayhem is tailgating someone, which causes someone to crash while its tailgating season it only reinforces the unpredictability of driving.

After setting the scene and creating relatability with the viewer, Allstate confronts us with the fact that our current insurance might not cover these types of unpredictable accidents. By showing us a situation that seems funny but it can result in real world consequences, Allstate emphasizes that having the right insurance is very important. At the end mayhem recommends Allstate which is the solutions to the very problem of unpredictable events and chaos which is Mayhem.
